Olympic medalists recognised as local heros
Kagoshima Prefecture announced on August 16 that it would present a special sports award from the Governor to the three homegrown athletes who won the medals at the London Olympics.
The three are Ms. Fukumoto Miho (28) from Ibusuki City, who received the silver medal as a member of the women's soccer team; and Ms. Sakoda Saori (24) from Kagoshima City, and Ms. Shinnabe Risa (22) from Kirishima City, both of whom received bronze in women's volleyball.
The award is given to individuals or groups who have achieved excellent results either in national or international sports competitions with those who finished in the top ten in the Olympic Games being eligible for the prize.

Fighters vie for lord of the ring
A martial arts event, "Gekitotsu in Kagoshima 2012," took place on August 19 at Taniyama Orocity Hall in Taniyama, Kagoshima City, where there were a total of 23 kickboxing and mixed martial arts matches—both by amateur and professional.
In the event, local fighters faced those from other prefectures such as Kumamoto and Tokyo. There were also demonstrations of Karate's "kata" forms and a "kumite" match in the middle of the event. The full house was wowed by showy entrance performances and knockout scenes.
Mr. Kozakura Keishi (41), the owner of a kickboxing gym in Kagoshima City, "Intergym," said he hoped to raise strong players and thereby contribute to the vitalization of combat sports in Kagoshima.

Local top 100 businesses net profit gained in 2011
According to the sales ranking of the businesses in Kagoshima Prefecture in 2011—compiled by the Kagoshima bureau of private research company Tokyo Shoko Research Ltd., Nangoku Corporation Ltd.—Kagoshima City had been in the primacy for five straight years by a sales volume of 160.39 million yen. Meanwhile, net sales of the top 100 companies had reached 1.81 trillion yen to mark the first year-on-year increase in six years since 2005.
Nangoku saw its sales figure boosted by 10.5 percent from the preceding year, which was led by the energy sector which accounts for nearly 80 percent of the trading conglomerate's overall sales volume. A grocery chain, Taiyo, was followed by Misumi, Minami Kyushu Family Mart, Yamakataya department store, and Nishimuta—all in Kagoshima City.

Survey: Kagoshima citizens eager in charity work
According to the results of a survey on living and activities—the basic survey on social life in 2011 by Kagoshima Prefecture—the percentage of people who engaged in volunteer activities during their free time over the last year was 34.4%, which was the third highest following Yamagata and Tottori prefectures.
Many of them are involved in such activities through neighbourhood associations, which have strong connections with the local communities. Kagoshima Prefecture Statistics Section analysed that there are enough opportunities for those who wish to take part in (volunteer activities), which indicates that people are highly conscious that they should do what they can do in their own communities.

Kagoshima to lure foreigners with summer camps
With the aim of promoting tourism in the summer season when there are few domestic school trips, Kagoshima Prefecture and the prefecture's Tourist Federation have launched a promotion campaign to invite overseas students for camping trips. As their first successful bid, they are now hosting a group of ten high school students from the city of Shanghai for a summer camp in the prefecture from July 28.
The authorities organised this first summer camp tour in collaboration with a Shanghai-based travel-planning company as a new type of educational trip during summer holidays when the prefecture receives no school excursion groups. They are also aiming to promote winter camps to help increase the demand for stays at private homes.

Kagoshima "lacked hospitality in 2011"
A travel survey in 2011 conducted by Tokyo-based Recruit Co. showed that Kagoshima Prefecture failed to make the top 10 in terms of "hospitality of the local people," which the prefecture had achieved for six consecutive years.
According to the same survey, due to the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train lines, the total number of travellers who stayed in the prefecture (excluding those on business trips, homecomings, and school trips) was an estimated 2.44 million with the growth rate, compared to the previous year, being the 10th highest nationwide at 5.3%. The company assessed that the hotels had been overcrowded with guests, which prevented them from providing courteous service.

Heart races with djembe beats...
The 17th Mishima Cup Yacht Race (sponsored by the event's committee) took place on July 28 along the 55-kilometre course from waters off Makurazaki port to Mishima-mura's Iōjima island. Around 140 people aboard 25 yachts from inside and outside of the prefecture took part in the event. However, the race ended in a no-contest as no sailboats were able to cross the finish line within the time limit due to weak winds.
There was an awards ceremony and a welcome event in the evening. In the prize-giving ceremony, since the race became invalid, prize winners were decided by lot. Some were seen as overcome with joy when receiving the "prizes," which were beyond their reach in reality. In the following welcome event, participants received a hearty welcome from the villagers and others with a djembe drums performance and special products of the three islands that comprise the Mishima village--Iōjima, Kuroshima, and Takeshima. They danced into the night to the beat of the the African drums.

Two Jigenryūs meet in museum
An exhibition room that showcases two different local schools of "Jigenryū" swordplay--Jigenryū and Nodachi-Jigenryū (Yakumaru-Jigenryū)-- opened in Senganen Japanese Garden in Kagoshima City on July 26.
According to the operator of Senganen, Jigenryū has a history of 400 years as the secret and unique technique of the Satsuma Clan. Yakumaru-Jigenryū, on the other hand, has been incorporated into the traditional Goju education system under which it was acquired mainly among the low-class warriors. Both of them were feared by other clans as "swordplays that kill with one blow."
The showroom displays wooden swords used for training, and panels describing the history of the two Jigenryūs. There is also a video showing the practice session of each style.

No. of tourists to Kagoshima City hits record-high in 2011
According to the preliminary report on tourism statistics of Kagoshima City in 2011, the combined number of tourists who either took a day trip or stayed overnight in the city had reached a record-high of 9,555,000, an increase of 7.7% compared with the previous year, and exceeded the 9,021,000 marked in 2008 when the city saw a booming business due to the broadcast of the annual history drama that featured the local Princess Atsuhime.
The number of tourists who stayed at hotels alone had also shot up by 13.9% from the year before to set the highest figure of 3,261,000. The number surpassed the all-time record of 3,227,000 for the first time in 38 years—the previous record marked in 1973 when the city was flooded with honeymooners.
The city attributed the growth to the increasing number of travellers who changed their destinations to the west Japan on account of the occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake, in addition to the effect of the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen lines.
