照国神社（鹿児島市）の創建を祝って近衛家から贈られ、１８７７（明治１０）年の西南戦争の混乱の中、行方不明になっていた儀礼用の太刀が１３４年ぶりに同神社に戻り、４月２６日公開された。２７日～６月２７日、照国記念館に展示される。
太刀は、幕末の京都の争乱で多くの宝物が焼失した近衛家に、島津家が派遣した刀工波平（なみのひら）６３代行安（ゆきやす）が打ったうちの一振り。島津斉彬を祭った同神社の創建を祝って１８６５（元治２）年、近衛忠煕（ただひろ）が奉納したとされる。忠煕は篤姫を将軍徳川家定に嫁ぐ前に養女とした。

Missing sword comes back to Terukuni Shrine after 134 yrs
A decorated sword for ceremonies that was presented by the Konoe Imperial Family to the Terukuni Shrine in Kagoshima City in celebration of its foundation, which had been unaccounted for during the Seinan War in 1877, returned to the shrine after 134 years, and was shown to the public on April 26. The antique will be on display at the Terukuni Memorial Hall from April 27 until June 27.
The sword is one of the works crafted by the 63rd generation of Yukiyasu of the Naminohira swordsmith family for the Konoe Family—whose many treasures had been destroyed by fire during the conflicts in Kyoto at the end of the Edo Period. It is said that Konoe Tadahiro dedicated the craftwork in 1865 to commemorate the foundation of the shrine that enshrined the local charismatic lord Shimadzu Nariakira. Tadahiro adopted the local Princess Atsuhime before she married into the then dictator Shogun Tokugawa Iesada.

セレモニーでは、運営するＮＰＯ法人「鹿児島グルメ都市企画」の竹之内雄作理事長が「地元食材を使った料理をたらふく食べて飲んで。屋台村が鹿児島を代表する名物、名所に育つよう、お力添えを」とあいさつ。南国殖産の永山在紀社長や屋台村の吉田英雄村長らと、くす玉を割って開村を祝った。

Joined by the president of Nangoku Shokusan Corporation, Mr. Nagayama Arinori and the mayor of the food village, Mr. Yoshida Hideo, they pulled a string to drop a decorative banner from the ceiling to celebrate the opening.

いちき串木野市の春の風物詩「串木野浜競馬大会」が４月２２日、日本三大砂丘の一つ吹上浜の最北端にあたる照島海岸で開かれ、県内各地から集まった７３頭が波打ち際のコースを駆け抜け、観客を沸かせた。
馬が輸送手段として主力だった１９５８年ごろ、荷馬車組合が花見の余興として始めた大会で今回で５５回目。軽種（競走馬）、中半血種、ばん馬（農耕馬）、ポニーの４部門で予選、決勝など２１レースがあり、主催者発表で約３万２０００人が来場した。

The annual spring feature of Ichiki-Kushikino City, "Kushikino Hama Keiba Taikai (Kushikino Beach Horse Racing Meeting)," took place on April 22 at Terushima Beach, which is located at the northern tip of Fukiage Beach--one of Japan's three longest beaches. Seventy-three horses that had been brought from every part of the prefecture galloped through the course along the edge of the surf to bring waves of cheers and applause from the spectators.
The event, which had its 55th anniversary this year, was started as an entertainment for the local horse and wagon association's cherry-viewing party around 1958 when horses were the main means of transportation. There were a total of 21 races including the preliminary round and the finals, where jockeys competed in four categories-- racehorses, half-racehorses, dobbins, and ponies-- in front of some 32,000 visitors, according to the organisers.
