コアラの赤ちゃん誕生　／平川動物公園
鹿児島市の平川動物公園で、待望の“平川７世”となるコアラが誕生した。雌の「ジュリア」は初出産で同園でも４年ぶり。桜井普子獣医師は「フラッシュ撮影やガラスをたたいての観察は怖がるので避けて」と呼びかけている。名前は春ごろ公募予定。これで同園のコアラは計１１頭になった。

Hello baby!
Hirakawa Zoological Garden in Kagoshima city had its long-awaited seventh generation - a baby koala. It was the first time for the mother koala “Julia” to deliver a baby, and the first in four years for the zoo. A veterinarian Ms. Sakurai Namiko is appealing to the visitors to refrain from flash photography and beating the show windows when observing so as not to frighten them. They will collect the name for the baby koala in spring. The new arrival has brought the number of koalas in the zoo up to eleven.

‘zoological garden’ は「動物園（zoo）」。‘long-awaited’ は「長く待った、待望の」。‘seventh generation’ は「７世」。


“It was the first time for the mother koala “Julia” to deliver a baby, and the first in four years for the zoo.”

‘for the first time for … to ~’ は「・・・とって～することは初めてだ」。‘the first (time) in … years’ は「・・・年ぶり」。


“A veterinarian Ms. Sakurai Namiko is appealing to the visitors to refrain from flash photography and beating the show windows when observing so as not to frighten them.”

‘veterinarian’ は「獣医（veterinarian surgeon）」。‘is appealing to …’ は「・・・に訴えている」。‘refrain from …’ は「・・・を差し控える、慎む、こらえる」。‘so as (not) to …’ は「・・・する（しない）ように、する（しない）ために」。


“They will collect the name for the baby koala in spring.”

‘collect the name for ~’ は「～の名前を募集する」。


“The new arrival has brought the number of koalas in the zoo up to eleven.”

全訳は「その新たな出生で同動物園のコアラの数は１１頭になった」。‘The new arrival’ は赤ちゃんコアラの誕生のこと。


タイトルの “Hello baby!”　は平川動物公園は九州で唯一コアラを飼育しており、総１４０種１０００点の動物が展示されています。また、今年度から７年計画で総事業費７０億円の全面改修を行う予定とのこと《関連ニュース：WEEKLY KAGOSHIMA on the Web(July.2-8, 2007)》。画期的な展示方法を採り入れて大成功を収めた旭川動物園のように、新たな観光資源になることを期待したいですね。
