子どもがつくる　新・平川動物公園　

鹿児島市の平川動物公園は、現在策定中の再整備基本設計に市内の小中学生のアイデアスケッチを募集する。動物の見せ方や動物舎のデザインなどテーマは自由で、優秀なアイデアは再整備に採用される。受け付けは２１日から９月７日まで。

Remodelling Hirakawa Zoo to raise ideas from kids
Hirakawa Zoological Park in Kagoshima city is seeking ideas for the basic design of its redevelopment program which is now under way, from the city’s elementary and junior high school students. Applicants are free to draw anything, from the way of displaying the animals to the facilities, and any exemplary ideas will be adopted for the remodelling plan. The period for the campaign is from June 21 until September 7.

‘Hirakawa Zoological Park’ は「平河動物公園」。‘zoo’ は ‘zoological’（動物の）の略です。‘is seeking ideas for ~’ は「～のアイデアを募集している」。‘basic design of its redevelopment plan’ は「再整備計画の基本設計」。‘under way’ は「進行中の」。



“Applicants are free to draw anything, from the way of displaying the animals to the facilities, and any exemplary ideas will be adopted for the remodelling plan.”

‘Applicants’ は「申込者」。‘are free to draw anything’ は「何を書いてもよい」。‘from the way of … facilities’ は「動物の見せ方から施設に至るまで」。‘exemplary ideas’ は「模範的なアイデア」。「ロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典」で ‘excellent and used as an example to follow’（非常に優れており、模範として使われるもの）と説明されているように、‘excellent’ や ‘great’ などより「基準を満たした」という意味がよりはっきりする感じがします。因みに、この「優秀なアイデア」が最優秀作品一つなのか、優れた作品ならばいくつか採用するのかはっきりしないため、ここでは ‘any exemplary ideas’（模範的なアイデアであればどれでも）としています。単数・複数を明記しない日本語を英語にするときの一つの難点です。



“The period for the campaign is from June 21 until September 7.”

‘The period from the campaign’ は「そのキャンペーンの期間」。‘the campaign’ は一文目の内容を指しています。　



平川動物公園の総面積は３１．４万平方メートルで、約１４０種・１０００点の動物が飼育されています。画期的な動物の飼育展示方法で人気の北海道の旭川動物園は約１５万平方メートル弱で、飼育頭数は約１３６種７５９点。動物の数の上ではそれ程差はありませんが、面積は倍以上、さらには温暖な気候、桜島と錦江湾を背景に湛える最高の立地など、旭川動物園以上に魅力的な動物園になる条件は十分にあります。子どもの豊かな想像力をもとに夢のある動物園になって欲しいですね。
