「こどもの日」に子どもたちの健やかな成長を願う「唐カラ船まつり」が５月５日、南さつま市坊津町泊であった。暦の上で夏が始まる二十四節気の「立夏」にふさわしい強い陽射しの下、新聞紙のかぶとに浴衣姿の未就学男児らが、昔の貿易船を形取った唐カラ船（からからふね）を引いて砂浜を快走した。
厄よけの小猿の人形が付いた色鮮やかな船を引いた十数人の男児らは、婦人会の踊り連や大型船を押す男性らと泊公民館を出発。木製の車輪をカラカラと響かせて九玉神社まで約３０分練り歩いた。

A festival to promote the healthy growth of children, "Karakara Fune Matsuri," was held on May 5—Children’s Day—in Tomari, Bonotsu-cho, Minamisatsuma City. Under the scorching sunlight, which was apt for "the first day of summer" according to the system of 24 seasonal divisions on the lunar calendar, preschool boys who wore Yukata summer cotton kimonos and Kabuto helmets made out of newspaper raced along the beach while tugging miniature boats called "Karakara Fune" that represented old-time trading ships.
More than a dozen children, who dragged the colourful boats that were decorated with a small monkey as a talisman against evil, left Tomari Community Centre, along with a women's dance group and men pulling a large boat. They paraded the 30-minute route to the Kudama Shrine, and pulled the boats on wooden wheels that made clattering sounds.
