鹿屋市串良町上小原（くしらちょう・かみおばる）の柳谷集落（通称・やねだん）で５月３日から６日まで、「第６回やねだん芸術祭」が開かれた。７人の集落在住芸術家の作品を展示・販売。家族連れが、制作者と歓談しながら個性の光る油彩画やＴシャツなどを鑑賞した。
同集落の人口は約３００人。集落の活性化につなげるため、空き家を利用した会場で毎年開催している。初めて訪れた肝付町の皆元ゆみ子さん（６３）は「想像力豊かな作品が多く驚いた。孫たちにも見せてやりたい」と油絵に見入っていた。

Yanedan art festival-- showcase of frontier spirit
"The 6th Yanedan Art Festival" took place in Yanagitani Village-- commonly known as "Yanedan"-- in Kamiobaru, Kushira-cho, Kanoya City from May 3 through 6. Seven artists based in the rural hamlet displayed and sold their works. Families enjoyed chatting with the producers while looking at their individualistic oil paintings, T-shirts, and other artworks.
The village of 30,000 people has been organising the event every year at vacant houses as part of its efforts to revitalise the local community. While staring with rapt attention at oil paintings, Ms. Miyamoto Yumiko (63) from Kimotsuki town, who visited the exhibition for the first time, said that she was surprised to see so many works of fertile imagination. She said she'd like to show them to her grandchildren.
