Fukiage Sand Festival
Minamisatsuma City's "Fukiagehama Sand Craft Festival 2013" was held from May 2 through 12 in the city's Takahashi, Kimpo-cho. Some 100 animal-shaped sand sculptures were on display under the theme of "Animal Sand Pictorial Book." The event was hosted by the Minami-Nippon Shimbun and others.
On the three-to-seven-metre high mound that was set up at the front of the gate were a total of nine sand creations featuring an array of animals, most of which were eight metres high. The outdoor event also featured six-metre high works of imaginary animals produced by guest artists from overseas; as well as sculptures by groups from inside and outside the prefecture, and by elementary and junior high school students in Kagoshima. Some 21,000 flowers also had been displayed to add colour to the sandy festival.
