Learn lessons from Sakurajima Taisho Eruption
Sakurajima Taisho Eruption 100th Anniversary Project Executive Committee, which is led by Kagoshima Prefecture, has begun a "Terakoya" workshop on disaster prevention for elementary and junior high schools in the prefecture, and held their first lecture at Kurokami Elementary School in Kagoshima City on April 18. "Terakoya" are private educational institutions that taught reading and writing skills to the common citizens during the Edo period (17th-18th centuries). The project is aimed at encouraging children to think about disaster prevention for which lecturers, including experts, explain the damages caused by the Taisho Eruption.
"Terakoya" will be conducted at schools, as requested, until January next year. They will take different approaches to the content according to the needs of each school.
