２００２年１月に旧大浦町の海岸に座礁したマッコウクジラ１４頭のうち、１頭の骨格標本（全長１１．６メートル、総重量１トン）を展示する施設「くじらの眠る丘」が３月１０日、南さつま市大浦町にオープンした。２階を含む見学通路から迫力ある骨格や展示資料に見入る家族連れらでにぎわった。
記念式典では、旧大浦町課長として当時のクジラ座礁に関わった村田敏雄・大浦地域審議会長が「標本の展示場所がなかっただけに感無量」と述べた。
施設は夜間は午後１０時までライトアップする。

Stranded whale finds place to rest
A facility that displays the skeletal remains of a sperm whale, "Kujira no Nemuru Oka (The Hill Where A Whale Lies)," opened in Ohura-cho, Minamisatsuma City on March 10. The museum exhibits the specimen of the 11.6-metre-long, 1-ton sea mammal, which is one of the 14 whales that were cast ashore a beach in the old Ohura-cho in January 2002. The galleries on the ground and first floor were crowded with families who gazed at the dynamic skeleton and other objects.
In the commemoration ceremony, Chairman of the Ohura Area Council, Murata Toshio, who as the former department chief of the old Ohura-cho was involved in the removal of the mass stranding of the cachalots, said he was filled with emotions as the remains of the whale had finally found a place to be displayed.
The facility will be illuminated until 10 pm.
