世界に向け宇宙授業
鹿児島市の和田中学校の理科教諭大塚泰史さん（４３）が２００９年２月、米ヒューストンで開かれる「宇宙を教育に利用するためのワークショップ」に参加し、宇宙に関連した授業を披露する。大塚さんは「緊張するが、普段通り分かりやすく、楽しい授業にできるよう頑張りたい」と話した。このワークショップは教育関係者が宇宙開発を題材とした指導方法について研修、意見交換を行うことを目的に米航空宇宙局（ＮＡＳＡ）が実施しており、日本からはその経験を日本でも共有することを目的に参加している。

Learn lessons from space
It has been learnt that a science teacher at Wada Junior high school in Kagoshima City, Mr. Otsuka Taishi (43), will give a lecture about space in ‘a workshop to use space for education’, which will be held in Houston, U.S. in February 2009. Mr Otsuka said though feeling a little nervous, he will try hard to make his lesson easy to understand as usual, so that the participants will enjoy it. The workshop will be conducted by the U.S. space agency, NASA, with the aim of offering educators an opportunity to receive training or exchange their views about educational methods on space technology. The Japanese trainees are expected to share the experience upon their return to Japan.

‘though … nervous’ は「やや緊張するが」。‘try hard to …’ は「・・・に尽力する」。‘make … understand’ は「（彼の授業を）わかりやすい授業にする」。‘make ~ easy’ は「～を容易にする」。‘as usual’ は「普段どおり、恒例により」。‘so that …’ は「・・・できるように」。

‘The workshop’ は ‘a workshop to use space for education’（「宇宙を教育に利用するためのワークショップ」）のこと。‘(be) conducted by ~’ は「～によって行われる［経営される、運営される］」。‘the … NASA’ は「米国の宇宙機関NASA」。‘NASA’ は ‘the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’ の略（abbreviation）です。‘with the aim of …’ は「・・・を目的として、・・・の旗印の下に」。‘offer opportunity to[for] …’ は「・・・する［・・・に］機会を提供する」。‘exchange views’ は「意見を交換する」。‘educational method’ は「教育方法、指導方法」。‘space technology’ は「宇宙（開発）技術、宇宙工学」。


“The Japanese trainees are expected to share the experience upon their return to Japan.”


‘trainee’ は「訓練を受ける人［動物］、見習い」。‘(be) expected to …’ は「・・・と期待されている、・・・するはずだ」。‘share an[O’s] experience’ は「経験を共有する」。‘upon[on] … Japan’ は「日本に戻り次第」。


タイトルの “Learn lessons from space”　は「宇宙の教訓を学ぶ」。
‘learn lessons from …’ は「・・・から学ぶ、教訓を得る」。
