Shinkansen discount big appeal to Kansai schools
According to a survey conducted by Kagoshima Prefectural Visitors Bureau on January 16, the number of junior high schools from Kansai area that are planning school trips to Kagoshima on board special Shinkansen express trains reserved for school trips is expected to reach 34 in 2014, which is an increase of nine from the previous year.
The school-trip-only bullet train services offer half the regular rate, including express fares. The southern Kyushu-bound special trains are operated from mid-April to mid-June, and run between Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima Chuo Stations.
The prefecture's Tourism Producer, Mr.Narasako Hidemitsu, said that (the reasons behind the increase) included an increase in the awareness of the merits of the discount rate, an increase in the number of villages that offer farm stays, the variety of activities and experiences being offered, and the combined efforts of the government and the private sector in promotional campaigns.
