原発で過酷事故が起きた場合の放射性物質拡散予測にミスが相次いだことから、東京電力福島第１原発を含む１７原発すべての「総点検」を進めていた原子力規制委員会は１２月１３日、訂正した拡散予測を公表した。九州電力の川内（薩摩川内市）と玄海（佐賀県玄海町）両原発は、九電が提供した風向きデータの風上と風下の解釈を取り違えて試算していたため、１６方位すべての数値が訂正され、１８０度回転する結果となった。
拡散予測は、国際原子力機関（ＩＡＥＡ）が避難の目安とする「事故後１週間の積算被ばく線量が１００ミリシーベルト」に達する距離を、１６方位ごとに気象データなどをもとに計算した。

Revised nuclear plant disaster forecast issued
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, on December 13, published a revised edition of its damage predictions in the case of serious accidents at nuclear power plants. The organisation had been conducting the general review of the data regarding all of the country's 17 atomic power stations, including Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant, after the revelation of a series of miscalculations on the extent of the spread of radioactive materials should severe accidents occur. Concerning Kyushu Electric Power Company (KEPCO)'s Sendai plant in Satsumasendai City, and Genkai plant in Genkai, Saga Prefecture, figures of all 16 points of the compass were reversed-- with the previous calculation having been made by a misinterpretation of windward and leeward data that was provided by KEPCO.
The damage prediction had been determined for each of 16 directions, based on the guideline of evacuation advisories issued by by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), by taking into consideration the meteorological data, among other factors.
