Ray of sunlight falls on defunct Makurazaki Airport
With regard to Makurazaki Airport which is due to be abolished at the end of 2012, Makurazaki City on November 27 concluded an agreement on the construction of a mega solar power plant with the Tokyo-based Orix Corporation and Fukuoka-based Kyudenko Corporation. The two companies will jointly establish a new company in the city—to which the city will lease the airport site. The construction of the photovoltaic station is expected to begin in July 2013, with the operation starting in March 2014.
According to the companies, a mega solar project utilising the site of an aerial port is the first of its kind nationwide. The envisaged plant is designed to have the output of 8,500 kilowatts with the annual power generation of 9.86 million kilowatts per hour, which is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 2,740 households. The electricity will be sold to Kyushu Electric Power Company.
