"Kinko Bay" used since Edo period
The latest find has revealed that the name "Kinko Bay," which is thought to have been established at the beginning of Meiji era (1868-1912)--as another name for Kagoshima Bay-- had been inscribed on a gravestone from the Edo era (1603-1868) in the Koshikijima islands, which is part of Satsumasendai City.
According to the curator of Kishinkan Centre for Historical Records of Bohnotsu, Minamisatsuma City, Mr. Hashiguchi Wataru, who conducted the survey, an epigraph that reads the word “Kinko Bay” was found on the headstone of a person from Ryukyu (now Okinawa) in the town of Sato, which is on one of the islands.
"Kinko Bay" was adopted in the name of "Kirishima-Kinko Bay National Park" in March this year.
