６０歳以上の人々が様々な競技で競い合う「ねんりんピック鹿児島２００８」が２６日、鹿児島県内１３市町で始まった。鹿児島市の県立鴨池陸上競技場であった総合開会式には観客を含め約２万人が参加。大会会長の伊藤祐一郎知事は「鹿児島の魅力を十分に満喫してください」とあいさつした。総合閉会式は２８日に鹿児島市民文化ホールである。

Showing off elderly power
‘Nenrinpic Kagoshima 2008,’ in which people aged 60 and over from nationwide compete in various fields, kicked off on October 26 in the prefecture’s 13 cities and towns. Around 20,000 people including the audience gathered at Kagoshima City’s Kamoike track and field park to attend the synthetic opening ceremony. Kagoshima governor and the event’s chairman, Mr. Ito Yuichiro said he hoped the participants would enjoy the local attractions to the full. The closing ceremony will be held on the 28th at the city’s cultural centre.

‘in … fields’ は「（ねんりんピックでは）全国から集まった６０歳以上の人々が様々な分野で競う」。‘aged … over’ は「６０歳以上の」。‘more than 60’ や ‘over 60’ だと「６１歳以上」という意味になるので注意。‘kicked off’ は「始まった（began, started）」。

‘including’ は「・・・を含む」。‘Kamoike … park’ は「鴨池陸上競技場」。‘to … ceremony’ は「総合開会式に出席するために」。‘attend’ は「〈人が〉〈学校・儀式・会合など〉に〈通例義務的に〉出席する、参列する」。‘synthetic’ は「統合の、統合的な」。

‘Kagoshima governor’ は「鹿児島県知事」。‘chairman’ は「議長、司会者；委員長」。‘participants’ は「参加者」。‘enjoy … full’ は「地元の魅力を十分に満喫する」。‘attraction’ は「魅力、引きつける力；魅力あるもの、呼び物」。‘to the full[fullest]’ は「十分に、心ゆくまで（as much as possible）」。



“The closing ceremony will be held on the 28th at the city’s cultural centre.”



‘closing ceremony’ は「閉会式」。‘be held’ は「開催される（take place）」。‘the … centre’ は「鹿児島市民文化ホール」。



タイトルの “Showing off elderly power”　は「高齢者パワーを見せつける」。
