若武者参上！　肝付町で流鏑馬
県指定無形民俗文化財の流鏑馬が１９日、肝付町の神社前の宮之馬場で奉納された。射手の武下英敏君（１３）は神馬「銀河号」にまたがり、彩り鮮やかな狩ぎぬ装束で登場。９本中８本を命中させ、うち１本は真ん中の的を支える竹を射抜く籠矢（こもりや）を成し遂げ、大勢の観衆から喝采を浴びた。射手は計９本の矢を放つが、「来年へ向けさらに上を目指す」ことから、８本がパーフェクトとされている。

Shooting for tomorrow …
On October 19, one of the prefecture’s designated intangible folklore cultural assets, the Yabusame horseback archery event, took place at Kimotsuki Town’s Miyanobaba Riding Ground in front of a shrine. Riding a horse named ‘Ginga’, dedicated to the shrine, the archer Takeshita Hidetoshi (13) appeared at the site clad in colourful traditional hunting costume, and successfully hit eight targets as well as one penetrating the pole that held the target in the centre, drawing applause from the audience. Although a shooter launches a total of nine arrows, to hit eight targets is regarded as perfect, allowing one to improve the following year.

‘prefecture’s … assets’ は「県指定無形民俗文化財」。‘designate’ は「〈人などが〉〈人・施設など〉を指名［指定、用意］する（appoint）」。‘intangible’ は「触れることのできない；実体のない、〈財産などが〉無形の（⇔tangible）」。‘Yabusame … event’ は「流鏑馬という馬の上から弓を放つ行事」。‘horseback’ は「馬の背（の）」。「流鏑馬」をもう少し詳しく説明するならば ‘Shinto ritual combining archery and horseback riding’（弓術と乗馬を組み合わせた神道行事）といったところでしょうか。‘took place’ は「開催された（was held）」。
