桜島足湯オープン
２３日、鹿児島市桜島横山町の溶岩なぎさ公園に日本最大級の足湯がオープンした。全長１０１メートル、一度に最大１７０人が利用でき、桜島や錦江湾を眺めながら楽しめる。同日開いた式典で森博幸市長は「桜島の多彩な文化、自然を生かした体験型観光に力を入れたい」とあいさつした。足湯は無料で午前９時から日没まで利用できる。

Sakurajima gets hot new foothold
On October 23, Japan’s largest footbath opened at Sakurajima’s Nagisa Lava Park in Yokoyama Town, Kagoshima City. The 101m-long artificial bath can accommodate up to 170 people at one time, from where people can enjoy the view of Mt. Sakurajima and the Kinko Bay before them. During the opening ceremony held on the same day, Kagoshima City mayor, Mr. Mori Hiroyuki said he would like to make the best use of the variety of culture and nature of the volcano island to promote experienced-based tourism. The facility is free of charge and is open from 9am until sunset.

‘footbath’ は「足湯」。「最大級の」は正確には ‘one of the ~’ ですが、この足湯は屋外のものでは最長ということなので単に ‘largest’ としています。

‘The … time’ は「その長さ１０１ｍの人工の風呂（足湯のこと）は一度に最大１７０人が利用できる」。‘artificial’ は「人工の、人工的な（human-made）；不自然な（unnatural）」。‘accommodate’ は「〈乗り物などが〉（混雑や不便なく）〈人〉を収容できる；・・・の収容能力がある」。‘from … them’ は「そこ（足湯のこと）から桜島や鹿児島湾の眺めを眼前に楽しめる」。‘view’ は「（目に見える）〔・・・の〕眺め、風景、景色（landscape, outlook, scene, scenery, sight, vista）」。‘before’ は「（今より）前に、以前に；（位置的に）・・・の前に（in front of）」。錦江湾と桜島は足湯からはそれぞれ前と後にあるわけですが、逆に座ればそれぞれ正面に見えます。

‘opening ceremony’ は「開会式」。‘on the same day’ は「同日」。‘mayor’ は「（市町村などの）長」。‘he … island’ は「その火山島（桜島のこと）の多彩な文化や自然を最大限に生かしたい（と言った）」。‘make (the best) use of …’ は「・・・を（最大限に）利用する」。‘a variety of …’ は「色々の、様々な（various）」。‘to … tourism’ は「体験型観光を推進するために」。‘promote’ は「・・・を促進する、奨励する（encourage, recommend, cultivate, push forward, go ahead）」。’tourism-based’ は「体験型の」。



“The facility is free of charge and is open from 9am until sunset.”


‘The … charge’ は「その施設（足湯のこと）は無料である」。‘free of charge’ は「無料で（for free, for nothing）」。‘is … sunset’ は「午前９時から日没まで利用できる」。‘sunset’ は「日没（時刻）（sundown）（⇔sunrise）；夕焼け」。



タイトルの “Sakurajima gets hot new foothold”　は「桜島が新たな足場を得る」。
‘hot new’ は「最新の（newest, up-to-date, latest, last, modern, brand-new）」。‘foothold’ は「足掛かり、足場」。‘hot’ ‘foot’ と、足湯に関連のある単語でまとめてみました。
