薩英戦争のきっかけとなった幕末の「生麦事件」から１５０年となるのに合わせた追悼・記念祭が８月２１日、同事件が起きた横浜市鶴見区であった。鹿児島市の森博幸市長が「近代日本の進路に大きな影響を与えた。歴史的意義を振り返り、情報発信していく」とのメッセージを寄せた。
同事件は１８６２年９月１４日（文久２年８月２１日）、乗馬中に島津久光の行列に遭遇したイギリス人４人が藩士に切られ、３人が死傷。対応をめぐり翌年に薩英戦争が起きた。

150th year marked since Namamugi incident
On August 21, a ceremony was held in Tsurumi district, Yokohama City, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the bloody Namamugi Incident that triggered the Anglo-Satsuma War. Kagoshima City mayor Mori Hiroyuki sent a message to the occasion saying, "(The incident) had great influence on the direction of modern Japan. We'd like to reaffirm its historical significance and provide information to the public."
The Namamugi Incident occurred on September 14, 1862, in which four English men on horseback were attacked by members of the Satsuma clan with swords when they came across the procession led by the Satsuma Lord Shimadzu Hisamitsu, leaving three of them dead or wounded. It led to the war between the Satsuma Clan and the British Empire in the following year after failing to reach a settlement over how to deal with the matter.
