霧島連山を「ジオパーク」に
霧島連山を囲む鹿児島、宮崎５市２町でつくる「環霧島会議」は、貴重な地質や地形を国連教育科学文機関（ユネスコ）が認定する「世界ジオパーク」に、霧島連山を申請することを決めた。「ジオパーク」は、火山活動などでできた地形や地質を保全、活用し、教育や地域貢献に役立てる自然公園で現在、１８カ国５７ヶ所が認定されている。前田終止霧島市長は「住民への理解も含め、申請への機運を盛り上げたい」と述べた。

Kirishima nominated ‘Geo Park’
‘The Kirishima Rim Conference’ which comprises five cities and two towns of Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures surrounding the Kirishima Mountain range has decided to apply the mountains for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)’s status of ‘World Geo Park.’ The ‘Geo Park’ is a nature park that is aimed at preserving the landscape and geology that were created by various natural phenomena such as volcanic activities for the sake of education and regional development, and so far, UNESCO has registered a total of 57 places from 18 countries. The Mayor of Kirishima City, Mr. Maeda Shūji said he would like to raise awareness of their attempt amongst the citizens.

‘The geology’ は「『ジオパーク』は地形や地質を保存するための自然公園である」。‘be aimed at …’ は「〈計画などが〉・・・するように意図されている」。‘landscape’ は「（ひと目で見渡せる陸地の）景色、風景、地形；展望、見通し（view, outlook, foresight, command, horizon, prospective, vista）」。‘geology’ は「地質（的特徴）、岩石（構造）；地質学」。‘natural phenomena’ は「自然現象」。‘phenomena’ は ‘phenomenon’ の複数形。‘volcanic activities’ は「火山活動」。‘for the sake of …’ は「・・・のために」。‘regional development’ は「地域発展、地域振興」。‘so far’ は「今までのところ（till now, up to the present）」。‘register’ は「・・・を登録する、記録する、登記する」。
＊朗読音声ではこの部分の文章が 'a total of ... have been registered by UNESCO' となっていますが、このような受身形をとるよりも、英語では上記のように能動態で主語を明確にしたほうが好まれます。

‘mayor’ は「（市町村などの）長」。‘said … citizens’ は「（前田市長は）市の試み（「ジオパーク」への霧島連山の申請のこと）について市民の感心を高めたいと述べた」。‘raise awareness’ は「（人の）自覚を促す；認識[関心]を高める」。‘amongst’ は ‘among’ と同義。



タイトルの “Kirishima nominated ‘Geo Park’”　は「霧島が『ジオパーク』の候補地に」。
