環境未来館オープン
環境学習や関連活動を支援し人材を育てる拠点を目指す「かごしま環境未来館」が１０日、鹿児島市城西２丁目にオープンした。展示学習室、リサイクルショップ、多目的ホールなどを備えるほか、館自体のＣＯ２削減を図るため、壁面や屋上は緑化し、風力・太陽光発電、地下水利用冷暖房なども備える。式典では「かごしま環境都市宣言」も行われ、宣言文を刻んだモニュメントが除幕された。

New museum makes eco, future, history
A new museum which aims to become a hub that provides support for various environmental studies and activities, Kagoshima Kankyō Mirai kan (Kagoshima Museum of Environment; Planet Earth and its Future), opened on October 10 at 2-chome, Jōsei, Kagoshima City. The museum houses many different kinds of facilities such as exhibition rooms, a recycle store and a multipurpose hall. In order to cut its own CO2 emissions, the walls and the rooftop of the building are covered with green, and the inside equipped with various CO2-reduction technologies such as wind and solar power generation, groundwater-use heating and cooling system. During the opening ceremony, Declaration for Kagoshima City’s Environment was read out and a monument with the inscription was unveiled.

‘A … activities’ は「様々な環境に関する学習や活動を支援する拠点になることを目指す新しい博物館」。‘aim to …’ は「・・・を目指す」。‘hub’ は「（車輪の）ハブ；（活動の）拠点、中心、中枢」。‘(Kagoshima … Future)’ は「鹿児島環境未来舘」の英語名。



“The museum houses many different kinds of facilities such as exhibition rooms, a recycle store and a multipurpose hall.”


‘The … facilities’ は「その博物館（環境未来館のこと）は多様な施設を収容している」。‘house’ は「〈人・建物が〉〈人〉を収容する、泊める、〈物〉を収蔵する（contain）」。‘exhibition room’ は「展示室」。‘multipurpose hall’ は「多目的ホール（~ auditorium）」。

‘In order to …’ は「・・・するために、・・・する手段として（so as to …）」。‘CO2 emission’ は「二酸化炭素排出（~output, excretion）」。‘CO2’ は ‘Carbon dioxide’ の化学記号（chemical symbol）。‘the … green’ は「建物の壁面と屋上は緑化されている」。‘cover with …’ は「〈人・物が〉〈物・人〉を〔・・・で〕覆う、包む」。‘the … technologies’ は「その（建物の）内面は様々な二酸化炭素削減技術が備えつけられている」。‘(be) equipped with …’ は「〔必要なものが〕備えつけられる、装備される」。‘such as …’ は「・・・のような」。‘wind … generation’ は「風力・太陽光発電」。‘groundwater … system’
は「地下水利用冷暖房」。‘groundwater’ は「地下水」。日本語の「エアコン」の元になっている ‘air conditioner’ は「ジーニアス英和辞典」では「空気調節［冷暖房］装置、エアコン」という説明がされていますが、英英辞典「ロングマン現代アメリカ英語辞典」では ‘a piece of equipment that makes the air in a building or room cooler and drier’ とされているように、一般的には「冷房」を指すことのほうが多いようです。

‘In order to …’ は「・・・するために、・・・する手段として（so as to …）」。‘CO2 ‘During’ は「〈特定の期間の〉間じゅう；〈特定の期間の〉ある時に、・・・の間に」。‘Declaration … Environment’ は「かごしま環境都市宣言」。‘declaration’ は「宣言、発表、布告」。‘read out’ は「・・・を読み上げる、音読する」。‘a … unveiled’ は「宣言文を刻んだモニュメントが除幕された」。‘monument’ は「〔・・・の〕記念碑［塔、像、建造物］；遺跡、遺物、記念物」。‘inscription’ は「銘、碑銘；碑文」。‘unveil’ は「・・・のベール［覆い］を取る；・・・の除幕式を行なう；〈秘密になっているもの〉を明らかにする（uncover, reveal）」。



タイトルの “New museum makes eco, future, history”　は「新しい博物館が環境保護と未来を過去のものにする」。

環境未来館は、鉄筋コンクリート２階建て、延べ床面積２９９２平方メートル。総事業費約４２億円をかけて建てられていますが、新聞で読む限りでは、その中身は県民交流センター６階で「生命の神秘さや尊さ，地球環境の大切さを学び，生命と環境の関わりを知り，生命や環境のために行動する青少年を育成する」のにピッタリな閑静さを保つ「生命と環境の学習館」とあまり大差ないようです。なにはともあれ、これで鹿児島市は２つも「環境教育の拠点」ができたうえに「環境都市宣言」もしたからには今後、積極的で先進的な環境政策を期待しましょう。
