三越鹿児島閉鎖へ
三越鹿児島店（鹿児島市呉服町）が来年５月６日に閉鎖されることが決まった。親会社の三越伊勢丹ホールディングスは、２０１３年度の連結営業利益７５０億円の目標達成には不採算部門の再編が必要と判断した。三越鹿児島店は昨年春に７階フロアを改装し、百貨店では全国初というスイーツのテーマパークを開設したが、思うように売り上げが伸びなかった。

Mitsukoshi Kagoshima to close its doors
It has been decided that the Kagoshima branch of the major department store Mitsukoshi, in the city’s Gofuku Cho, will close its doors on May 6 next year. The decision was made by its parent company, Mitsukoshi-Isetan Holdings, who judged it was necessary to restructure loss-making divisions in order to achieve a group operating profit of 7.5 billion yen in the fiscal year 2013. Mitsukoshi Kagoshima refurbished its seventh floor last spring for a sweets theme park, the first among the nation’s department stores. However, sales haven’t grown as expected.

‘It … decided that …’ は「（that以下）が決定した」。‘the … Mitsukoshi’ は「大手デパートである三越の鹿児島支店」。‘branch’ は「枝；支流；支社、支店」。‘major’ は「主要な、一流の（⇔minor）」。‘close its doors’ は「門戸を閉ざす、閉店する、閉鎖する」。

‘The … Holdings’ は「その決定（三越鹿児島店の閉鎖）は、その（三越鹿児島店のこと）親会社である三越伊勢丹ホールディングスが下した」。‘make a decision’ は「決定する、決心する」。‘parent company’ は「親会社（holding company, controlling company《持ち株会社》etc.）」。逆の「子会社」は ‘subsidiary, affiliated company[firm, concern], branch factory’ など。‘who … divisions’ は「（三越伊勢丹ホールディングス）は不採算部門の再編が必要だと判断した」。‘restructure’ は「〈企業・システム・社会〉を再構築［再編成］する」。「再び、新たに」などを表す接頭辞の ‘re-’ と ‘structure’（・・・を組み立てる）が合わさった単語です。‘loss-making’は「損失を生み出す、赤字の（unprofitable）」。‘in … 2013’ は「２０１３年度の連結営業利益７５０億円の目標を達成するために」。‘in order to …’ は「・・・するために、・・・する手段として（《略式》so as to …）」。‘achieve’ は「・・・を達成する、〈人が〉〈幸福・名声など〉を〈努力して〉獲得する」。‘group operating profit’ は「連結営業利益」。‘fiscal year’ は「会計年度」。

‘Mitsukoshi … park’ は「三越鹿児島は昨年春に７階フロアをスイーツのテーマパーク用に改装した」。‘refurbish’ は「・・・を磨き直す；・・・を新たに改造する、・・・を改装する」。因みに日本語で家の建て替えや改造を意味して用いられる「リフォーム」は ‘remodel’ ‘renovate’ などと言います。‘the … stores’ は「国内のデパートとしては初めて」。



“However, sales haven’t grown as expected.”


「しかしながら、思ったように売り上げが伸びなかった」。‘sales’ は「売り上げ（turnover, return, yield［利益］）」。



タイトルの “Mitsukoshi Kagoshima to close its doors”　は「三越鹿児島が閉店へ」。

映画館の撤退に続き、天文館にまたまた大きな打撃です。郊外型の大型ショッピングセンターの相次ぐ進出などで天文館の衰退が叫ばれて以降、「We Love 天文館協議会」が中心となり様々な取り組みをしており、以前ここでも三越鹿児島店と山形屋の店長が互いの店舗に立って接客したというニュースを取り上げていただけに、驚きを隠せません。少子化や新幹線の開通など、様々な衰退要因があるなか、鹿児島の中心地をなんとか盛り上げていかなければなりません。
