第５９回鹿児島県下一周市郡対抗駅伝競走大会は２月２５日午前９時、鹿児島市役所前をスタート。５３区間、５８８．６キロを５日間にわたって駆け抜ける熱戦の幕を開けた。
市役所前のみなと大通り公園周辺では、早朝から選手たちが入念にウオーミングアップ。雲の間から時折薄日の差す空の下、森博幸鹿児島市長の号砲で「花の１区」を任された１２人が駆け出した。
沿道には応援の横断幕やのぼりが掲げられ郷土色いっぱい。小旗を手にした市民らが激励の拍手と声援で選手を見送った。

Inter-city Ekiden kicks off
The 59th Kagoshima Prefecture Inter-city Relay Marathon started at 9 am on February 25 in front of Kagoshima City Hall to kick off the exciting 588.6 kilometre race divided into 53 sections over the span of five days.
Near Minato Odori Park in front of the city hall, runners were seen warming up from early morning. Under a cloudy sky with the occasional stream of sunlight, twelve athletes, who had been selected as the honourable first runners, took off running at the sound of the starting pistol fired by Kagoshima City Mayor Mori Hiroyuki.
Streets along the route had been filled with banners which showed support for the teams of each region. As the runners passed by, local residents holding small flags cheered and applauded.
