鹿児島県が２０１１年に実施した「鹿児島の男女の意識に関する調査」で、「夫は外で働き、妻は家庭を守るべき」と考えている人は５２．９％と半数を超えた。前回０７年調査より２．８ポイント減少したものの、内閣府の全国調査（０９年、４１．３％）を１０ポイント以上上回っている。
地域社会で男女平等と感じる人は２９．６％。社会通念、慣習、しきたりなどでの平等感のある人は１５．９％にとどまる。うち男性の２２．２％が平等と回答したのに対し、女性は１１．３％で、男女で意識差があることも浮き彫りになった。
県内の２０歳以上の男女５０００人を調査。１８３９人（男性７８３人、女性１０３９人、不明１７人）が回答した。

Survey shows Kagoshima men bossy to women
An attitude survey concerning gender equality among Kagoshima citizens, conducted by Kagoshima Prefecture in 2011, showed that 52.9% of people thought that “husbands should work outside and wives should manage the home.” Although the figure had dropped by 2.8% from the previous survey in 2007, it exceeded the nationwide average of 41.3% (conducted by the Cabinet Office in 2009) by more than 10%.
According to the investigation, those who felt that men and women were treated equally in the local society stood at 29.6%. Meanwhile, merely 15.9% responded the same way in terms of social acknowledgement, customs, and traditional practices. Among them, 11.3% of women thought both sexes were treated on an equal footing against the men’s 22.2%, showing a great difference in consciousness between the two.
The survey was carried out on 5,000 men and women in the prefecture aged 20 and older. Of them, 1,839 people (783 men,1,039 women, and 17 unknowns) responded.
