Kinko Bay to be listed as a National Park
In response to the Environment Ministry’s recommendation to divide Kirishima-Yaku National Park, between Kagoshima and Miyazaki Prefectures, into “Kirishima-Kinko Bay National Park” (which will add Aira Cardela located at the closed-off section of Kinko Bay to Sakurajima and Kirishima mountains) and the natural world heritage site “Yakushima National Park,” the Central Environment Council’s Natural Environment Committee submitted an acceptance letter to the Environment Minister on December 22.
According to the ministry, partition of the existing national park will be the second case following Oze, which was separated from Nikko in 2007. This time, Yakushima will be divided to become the 30th national park nationwide.
By separating Kirishima-Kinko Bay, which is mainly composed of landscape and scenery formed by volcanic activity, and Yakushima, which maintains a unique ecosystem, the authorities aim at the protection as well as the utilisation of the areas based on their characteristics.
