政府の情報収集衛星「レーダー３号機」を搭載したＨ２Ａロケット２０号機は１２月１２日午前１０時２１分、南種子町の種子島宇宙センターから打ち上げられた。打ち上げ業務を担った三菱重工業は打ち上げから約１５分後、衛星を分離して軌道に投入、打ち上げは成功した。Ｈ２Ａは７号機から１４機連続成功となり、通算成功率は９５％になった。
情報収集衛星は、１９９８年の北朝鮮のミサイル「テポドン」発射を受けて導入した事実上の偵察衛星。外交・防衛等の安全保障や大規模災害での情報収集を目的にしている。

Spy satellite launch success
The H2A Rocket No.20 carrying the state-sponsored-information-gathering satellite, “Rader No.3,” was launched from Tanegashima Space Centre in Minamitane-cho at 10:21am on December 12. About 15 minutes after lift-off, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which took charge of the launching business, separated the satellite from the rocket and successfully put it into orbit. This has been the fourteenth consecutive success for the H2A since rocket no.7, with the overall success rate increasing to 95%.
The intelligence-gathering satellite is a de-facto reconnaissance satellite that was introduced in response to the launch of the Taepodong ballistic missile by North Korea in 1998. It is aimed at gathering information for the purpose of diplomacy and security as well as for large-scale disasters.
