Cities tie up to take advantage of samurai villages
Minamikyushu, Izumi, and Satsumasendai cities, which have samurai compounds designated as the National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation Area, held their first “Samurai Village Summit” in Chiran, Minamikyushu City on November 14. The three mayors concluded a partnership agreement in making use of the historical villages as tourism resources.
In a panel discussion that was also joined by the representatives of preservation societies of each samurai colony, Minamikyushu City Mayor, Mr. Shimoide Kanpei, said: “In light of the situation that a growing number of tourists enjoy walking around towns either as individuals or as part of small groups, we would like to promote the walking tour of samurai compounds in partnership with the three cities.” Izumi City Mayor, Mr. Shibuya Toshihiko, responded: “We can generate fun tours around (the three cities) if we issue a common stamp card (for the samurai dwellings) in the three cities.”
