活発な噴火活動が続く桜島昭和火口の大きさが、２００６年から１０年の４年間で２．４倍に拡大していることが、大隅河川国道事務所の調査で明らかになった。横幅は最大３３７メートルとなっている。火山噴出物の堆積も進み、土石流が発生しやすい状態だとして、注意を呼び掛けている。
桜島昭和火口は０６年６月、１９４６（昭和２１）年の大噴火以来、６０年ぶりに噴火活動を再開。１１年９月までに２１８７回爆発した。

活発な噴火活動が続く桜島昭和火口の大きさが、２００６年から１０年の４年間で２．４倍に拡大していることが、大隅河川国道事務所の調査で明らかになった。横幅は最大３３７メートルとなっている。火山噴出物の堆積も進み、土石流が発生しやすい状態だとして、注意を呼び掛けている。
桜島昭和火口は０６年６月、１９４６（昭和２１）年の大噴火以来、６０年ぶりに噴火活動を再開。１１年９月までに２１８７回爆発した。

Sakurajima’s Showa crater doubled in 4yrs
A survey by Osumi Office of River and National Highway has revealed that the size of Mt.Sakurajima’s dynamically erupting Showa crater has expanded 2.4 times the size measured in 2006 with the maximum diametre reaching 337 metres. The authorities are alerting the residents to the increasing risk of debris flow as volcanic junk has been accumulating in the crater.
Sakurajima Showa crater resumed eruptive activity in June 2006 after 60 years since the major eruption in 1946. Since then, a total of 2,187 eruptions were recorded until September 2011.
