「８・６水害」から１５年
鹿児島市を中心に襲った集中豪雨で死者・行方不明者４９人を出した１９９３年の「８・６水害」から６日で丸１５年を迎えた。１５人が犠牲になった同市吉野町花倉地区では、花倉町内会長の坂元良孝さん（７１）ら住民５人が住民の墓に線香と花を手向けた。坂元さんは「住民には高齢者が多い。協力して早め早めの避難を心がけたい」と話した。

Residents remember 8/6 flood
August 6 marked fifteen years since the intense deluges called the ‘8/6 flood’ in 1993 that mainly hit Kagoshima City and left 49 missing or dead. In the city’s Kekura District of Yoshino Town where 15 people fell victim to the disaster, five residents including the block chief Mr. Sakamoto Yoshitaka (71) visited the graves of the victims to make offerings of flowers and incense. Mr. Sakamoto said everyone will need to cooperate to evacuate as early as possible in future events, since they have many senior citizens in the community.

‘August … 1993’ は「鹿児島市を中心に襲った１９９３年の集中豪雨「８・６水害」から６日で丸１５年を迎えた」。‘mark’ は「・・・に印をつける；・・・を記念する」。‘intense’ は「（光・温度などが）強烈な、激しい（extreme）；（感情・行動などが）激しい（impassioned）」。‘deluge’ は「大洪水、大水（flood）；豪雨、大雨」。‘that … dead’ は「（８・６水害は）鹿児島市を中心に襲い、死者・行方不明者４９人を出した」。‘hit’ は「（人・物が）・・・を打つ、たたく（beat, strike）；（事が）・・・に打撃を与える、襲う、攻撃する（strike）」。‘missing’ ‘dead’ はそれぞれ「行方不明者」「死者」。

‘15 … disaster’ は「１５人がその災害の犠牲となった」。‘fall victim to …’ は「・・・の犠牲になる」。‘the block chief’ は「町内会長」。‘block’ は「（４つの街路に囲まれた）街区、区画」。‘make an offering’ は「お布施を上げる、お賽銭をあげる、供え物をする」。‘incense’ は「（宗教的儀式で用いる）香、香料」。



“Mr. Sakamoto said everyone will need to cooperate to evacuate as early as possible in future events, since they have many senior citizens in the community.”

‘Mr. … events’ は「坂元氏は、今後の災害時はみんなが協力してできるだけ早く避難しなければいけないと話した」。‘cooperate’ は「・・・と協力する、協同する」。‘evacuate’ は「避難する、避難させる」。‘event’ は「（重要な）出来事、（注目すべき）事件；行事、催し」。後者の意味で使われる日本語の「イベント」という表現に慣れている人には意外な使われ方かもしれませんね。‘since … community’ は「地域住民には高齢者が多いので」。‘senior citizen’ は「高齢者、お年寄り（elderly person）」。‘old person’ ‘aged person’ よりも丁寧な表現です。‘community’ は「地域社会；自治体」。



タイトルの “Residents remember 8/6 flood”　は「住民が８・６水害を追悼」。 ‘remember’ は「追悼する（commemorate, memorialise）」。

かつて甲突川に掛かっていた歴史的な石橋を押し流し、その後５つの石橋全てを撤去するきっかけになった８・６水害から早１５年。全ての石橋を移設復元した石橋記念公園は、昨年の「日本の歴史公園１００選」（実際には２５０箇所）にも選ばれるなど、甲突川に掛かっていた「現役」の頃とはまた違った石橋の新たな魅力を見ることができます。石だけで造られ、江戸時代末期から約１５０年も現役の橋として活躍した（車まで通っていた！）石橋と、その建設に尽力した人々の努力、そして自然の脅威を伝える場として後世まで大事に残していきたいものです。
