鹿児島市を中心に襲った集中豪雨で死者・行方不明者４９人が出た１９９３年の８・６水害は８月６日、発生から丸１８年を迎えた。土砂崩れで１５人が犠牲になった同市吉野町の花倉地区では、当時の土砂が残る病院跡や共同墓地に住民が花を手向け、「水害の記憶を風化させない」と誓った。
毎日、親せきの墓参りをする際、犠牲者の墓の花をかえている坂下チエ子さん（７６）は「土砂のかかった病院を見るたびに当時を思い出す」と、涙を流しながら冥福を祈った。

8/6 Flood victims remembered
August 6 marked the 18th year since 8/6 Flood in 1993 due to concentrated heavy rain that struck mainly Kagoshima City and claimed 49 dead or missing. In Kekura district in Yoshino-cho where 15 people died in a mudslide, residents offered flowers at the former hospital, where the landslide from the disaster still remains, and a cemetery and vowed they “will not forget the memory of the flood”.
Ms. Sakashita Chieko (76), who changes the flowers at the victims’ graves everyday when visiting her relatives’, mourned the loss of the lives while shedding tears, saying: “I recall the days every time I see the hospital with earth and sand”.
