鹿児島県が８月４日発表した学校基本調査結果速報によると、２０１１年度の鹿児島県内の児童・生徒・園児数は前年度より３２７３人（１．４％）少ない２２万６０５８人だった。小学校は２８年連続、中学校は２４年連続で減少し、調査開始の１９４８年度以降最少。幼稚園や専修学校で２８８人増えたものの、小、中、高校の児童生徒はいずれも減り計３５６１人の減少となった。

Kagoshima school children shrunk by 3,500 in 2011
According to a preliminary report of the school basic survey result released by Kagoshima Prefecture on August 4, the number of children at primary schools, junior high schools, high schools and kindergartens had been declined by 3,273 (1.4%) at 226,058. Above all, the number of primary and junior high school students had been decreasing for 28 years and 24 years, respectively, with each marked the lowest since 1948 when they began the survey. While the number of kindergartens and colleges had grown by 288, all the primary, junior high and high schools saw the number of students diminished with a combined decrease of 3,561.------------------------------------------------------------------
