３月１２日の九州新幹線全線開業から１００日目となる６月１９日、ＪＲ九州は鹿児島中央駅など各県の主要駅で「百日（ももか）祝い」と題する記念式典を開いた。開業前日に東日本大震災が発生して開催できなかった出発式をあらためて実施した。
鹿児島中央駅では、新幹線の長い活躍を願い、１００歳の末吉正彦さん＝鹿児島市＝を一日駅長に迎えた。長井敏郎駅長とともに、右手を挙げ、新大阪行きの「さくら」に出発の合図を送った。

Shinkansen Sakura passes 100 day mark
On June 16, the 100th day after the opening of the entire Kyushu Shinkansen line on March 12, JR Kyushu held a memorial ceremony entitled “Momoka Iwai (100th day Celebration)” at its major stations in each prefecture including Kagoshima Chuo Station. It held a departing ceremony which had been suspended due to the occurrence of the Great East Japan Earthquake the day before the opening of the Shinkansen line.
At Kagoshima Chuo Station, in the hope of the bullet train’s lasting success, they commissioned one hundred-year-old Mr. Sueyoshi Masahiko from Kagoshima City to be a one-day station master. Along with station master Mr. Nagai Toshiro, the centenarian raised his right hand to give shinkansen “Sakura,” bound for Shin-Osaka, a departure sign.
