斉彬自作の茶碗を確認
幕末の薩摩藩主・島津斉彬（１８０９－５８年）が自作したという黒茶碗の所在が１１６年ぶりに確認された。斉彬が２４歳の時に製作したもので、明治時代の古文書に記載されたものと同一とみられる。茶碗を所有する鹿児島市古美術商は、斉彬筆とされる牡丹（ぼたん）図などと合わせて近く黎明館に寄託する。

116-yr-old pottery found Nariakira-made
A black-coloured tea cup which is believed to have been made by the then Satsuma Lord Shimadzu Nariakira (1809-58) has been discovered for the first time in 116 years. The pottery was formed by Nariakira at the age of 24 and is believed to be the same one as written on the ancient document from the Meiji era in the late 19th century. An antique dealer in Kagoshima City, who owns the pottery, will deposit the royal cup to the Reimeikan Museum together with other items that are also believed to be made by Nariakira, including a drawing of a peony flower.

‘A cup’ は「黒色の茶碗」。‘which … Nariakira’ は「（茶碗は）当時の薩摩藩当主である島津斉彬によって作られたとされる」。‘(be) believed to …’ は「・・・であると思われる、推測される」。‘has … 116 years’ は「１１６年ぶりに発見された」。‘for the first time in …’ は「・・・ぶりに」。

‘The … 24’ は「その陶器（黒茶碗のこと）は斉彬が２４歳の時に作った」。‘form’ は「・・・を形作る；形成する」。‘at the age of …’ は「・・・歳の時に」。‘is … century’ は「１９世紀後半の明治時代の古文書に記載されたものと同一とみられる」。‘ancient document’ は「古文書」。「１９世紀・・・」は補足説明として付け加えてあります。



“An antique dealer in Kagoshima City, who owns the pottery, will deposit the royal cup to the Reimeikan Museum together with other items that are also believed to be made by Nariakira, including a drawing of a peony flower.”

‘An …Museum’ は「茶碗を所有する鹿児島市の古美術商はその君主の茶碗を黎明館に寄託する」。‘antique dealer’ は「古美術商」。‘own’ は「・・・を所有する（have）」。‘deposit’ は「（ある場所に）（特に注意して確実に）置く；（貴重品など）を預ける；預金する；寄託する」。‘the royal cup’ は「斉彬自作の黒茶碗」のこと。‘royal’ は「国王（女王）の」。‘together … Nariakira’ は「斉彬作とされるほかの品目とともに」。‘together with …’ は「・・・と共に；・・・に加えて」。‘item’ は「品目、項目、種目」。‘including … flower’ は「牡丹の花の絵を含む」。‘including …’ は「・・・を含む」。‘p(a)eony’ は「シャクヤク、ボタン」。因みにボタンの花言葉は「恥」「羞恥」だそうです。



タイトルの “116-yr-old pottery found Nariakira-made”　は「１１６歳の陶器は斉彬作によるものだとわかった」。
‘yr’ は ‘year’ の省略表記。‘find’ は「・・・を見つける、発見する；・・・とわかる」。‘-made’ は「・・・製の；・・・作の」。
