鹿県知事に伊藤氏再選
任期満了に伴う鹿児島県知事選挙は１３日投票が行われ、現職の伊藤祐一郎氏（６０）が３８万２３４２票を獲得して再選を果たした。元県議で共産党が推薦する祝迫かつ子氏（６５）は初の女性知事候補として１４万９７９５票を得たが、及ばなかった。現職の信任投票の色合いが濃かった選挙戦は盛り上がりを欠き、投票率は過去２番目の低さの３８．９９％にとどまった。

Ito re-elected as Kagoshima Gov.
Kagoshima gubernatorial election for the new term took place on July 13 and the incumbent Mr. Ito Yuichiro (60) won re-election gaining 382,342 votes. The former prefectural councillor and the Communist Party-backed Ms. Iwaizako Katsuko (65), who received 149,795 ballots, fell short of expectation as the first female candidate in the prefecture. However, the election received little attention with voter turnout falling to its second lowest level at only 38.9%, as it was mainly deemed as a de facto confidence vote for Ito.

‘Kagoshima … tem’ は「新たな任期に向けての鹿児島県知事選」。‘gubernatorial’ は「知事の」。‘took place’ は「開催された(was held)」。‘the incumbent’ は「現職の」。‘won re-election’ は「再選を果たした」。‘gaining … votes’ は「３８万２３４２票を獲得して」。‘gain’ は「（努力・競争で）得る（get, obtain, acquire）」。

‘The … councillor’ は「元県議の」。‘Communist Party-backed’ は「共産党が推薦する」。‘back’ は「支持する、支援する（support）；（乗り物など）を後退させる（reverse）」。‘who … ballots’ は「（祝迫氏は）１４万９７９５票を得た。 ‘receive’ は「・・・を受け取る、受領する（get）」。‘fell … prefecture’ は「県内初の女性候補としての期待に答えられなかった」。‘fall(come) short of …’ は「（目標・基準・期待などに）達しない（<->come(live) up to）」。‘candidate’ は「立候補者、推薦候補」。

‘the … attention’ は「その選挙はほとんど注目を集めなかった」。‘receive(draw, gather, attract, grab) attention’ は「注目を集める」。‘little’ は「ほとんど～ない」。‘a little’（少し）と混同しないように注意。‘with … 38.9%’ は「投票率は過去２番目に低い３８．９％に下がって」。‘voter turnout’ は「投票率」。‘as … Ito’ は「伊藤氏に対する事実上の信任投票とみなされたため」。‘deem’ は「・・・とみなす、考える（think, consider）」。‘de facto’ はラテン語が語源で「事実上の（in fact）」。‘confidence vote’ は「信任投票」。逆の「不信任投票（決議）」は ‘no-confidence vote; vote of no confidence; vote of censure’。
