鹿児島大学と県内の酒造会社１２社が進めていた「宇宙焼酎」計画で、米スペースシャトル・エンデバーに搭載されていた原料のこうじと酵母が６月６日夜、同大に到着した。今後同大が無重力状態による変化を分析し、良好な原料を１２社に配布。各社が年内をめどに「宇宙焼酎」を完成させる。
スペースシャトル・エンデバーは５月１６日に打ち上げられ、６月１日帰還した。http://373news.com/modules/pickup/article.php?storyid=32849

Drunk with zero gravity
Rice malt and yeast, raw materials for making shochu liquior that had been on board the U.S. space shuttle Endeavor for the “Space shochu” project promoted by Kagoshima University and twelve shochu makers in the prefecture, arrived at the university on the night of June 6. The university will analyse the effects of the weightless conditions on the ingredients and deliver those that are in good condition to the twelve companies. The distilleries will then complete the “Space shochu” within the year.
The space shuttle Endeaver lifted off on May 16 and returned on June 1.
