特攻隊遺書を英訳
南九州市の知覧特攻平和会館が、遺書や手紙など展示内容の英訳を読めるタッチパネル式の情報端末を設置、英語版ガイドブックの販売も始めた。鹿児島市の「マリンポートかごしま」の開業などで、増加している外国人見学者に対応するのが狙い。英訳を担当した同会館の川床剛士氏（６７）は「国、家族を思って書いた隊員の心を理解し、英語に直すのは難しかった」と話している。

Riding on Kamikaze breeze
The Chiran Peace Museum in Minamikyushu City has installed a touch-screen information terminal that provides an English translation of its displays, including the kamikaze pilots’ farewell notes and letters, and has started selling an English edition of its guidebook. This is in response to the increased number of foreign visitors due to the opening of the Marine Port in Kagoshima City. Mr. Kawatoko Takeshi (67), a staff member who translated the exhibits, said it was difficult to comprehend the feelings of the suicide bombers and translate the letters, which were dedicated to their families and the nation.

‘The … Museum’ は「知覧特攻平和会館」。‘has … displays’ は「（知覧特攻平和会館は）展示内容の英訳を読めるタッチパネル式の情報端末を設置した」。‘install’ は「（設備・装置など）を取付ける、設置する；（人）を任命する、就任させる（appoint）」。‘touch-screen’ は「タッチパネルの（touch panel）」。‘information terminal’ は「情報端末」。‘terminal’ は「（鉄道・バス・飛行機・船などの）終点（始点）；コンピュータの端末」。‘provide’ は「・・・を提供する、供給する」。‘including … letters’ は「カミカゼ・パイロット（特攻隊員のこと）の遺書や手紙を含む」。‘including…’ は「・・・を含む（such as）」。‘farewell note’ は「遺書」。‘has … guidebook’ は「英語版ガイドブックの販売を始めた」。‘edition’ は「（本などの）版；（同じ版による）全発行部数」。

‘This … visitors’ は「これ（英訳・英語版ガイドブックの発行）は、外国人見学者数の増加に対応するものである」。‘in response to …’ は「・・・に応じて、対応して」。‘due … Port’ は「マリンポートの開業によって」。‘due to …’ は「・・・の原因で、・・・によるもので（because of, on account of, owing to, thanks to）」。

‘exhibit’ は「展示品、陳列品（exhibition, display）」。‘it … letters’ は「自爆者たち（特攻隊員のこと）の気持ちを理解して手紙を翻訳するのは難しかった」。‘suicide’ は「自殺」。‘-(i)cide’ は「・・・を殺す人（こと、薬剤）」を意味する名詞を作る接尾辞です。
I.e. genocide（大量虐殺） pesticide;insecticide（殺虫剤） homicide（殺人）
‘which … nation’ は「（手紙は）彼らの家族や国に捧げられたものである」。‘dedicate’ は「（時間・精力など）を（人・目的などに）捧げる（give up）；（~onselfで）・・・に専念する（devote）」。



タイトルの “Riding on Kamikaze breeze”　は「カミカゼに乗って」。
彼らの思いが「カミカゼ」に乗って、世界中に届けばよいのですが。


GAiGOの国際科の２年生は昨年、「日本の文化」の校外学習として知覧特攻平和会館を訪れ、今回展示物などの英訳にあたられた同館の川床剛士氏によるお話も聞かせていただきました。川床氏は、外国人見学者向けに英語によるお話も用意されており、当校の学生達も、触りだけ英語での講義を聞かせていただきました。そういった縁もあり、今回、英語版ガイドブックをお贈りいただきました。ありがとうございました。

川床氏のお話では、残念なことに、アメリカ人や中国人・韓国人の来館はほとんどないそうです。知覧特攻平和会館は、アメリカでの原爆機「エノラ・ゲイ」の展示や、中国の南京大虐殺に関する記念館など、原爆の正当化や反日感情を煽るなどの政治的な意図が強いものとは違い、「戦争の被害者」である特攻隊員の目を通して戦争の悲惨さを訴えるものだと思います。どれだけ正当化された戦争でも、現場では殺すか、殺されるかの末に憎しみと悲しみが残るだけです。そんな、当事者としての特攻隊員たちの声を聞けば、人間はなぜ戦争をするのかという、根本的にして困難な問題について考えるきっかけになるのではないでしょうか。政治的な利害を抜きに、アメリカ人や中国人・韓国人も来館できるような状況になることが望まれます。
