Fathers care less about care leave?
Kagoshima Labour Office has compiled the result of a questionnaire on leave for child care or nursing care at companies within its jurisdiction. According to the survey, more than 90 % of the local businesses had introduced the childcare leave; however, merely 3.4% of the male workers had taken advantage of the system compared to 94.4% for female. Although the system is being gradually implemented throughout Kagoshima, it also highlighted the deep-rooted consciousness among workers that “childcare leave is for women”. In an effort to raise their awareness, some companies in the prefecture have even made it nearly mandatory for their employees to take the leave.
The survey was conducted last year on 1,744 business institutions in the prefecture. Seven hundred and eighty-nine companies responded.
