種子島西岸で隣り合う西之表市住吉、中種子町星原の両校区の子どもたちによる「仲良し相撲大会」が５月７日、住吉小学校相撲場で開かれた。
昭和初期に始まった伝統行事で、今年は８０回の節目。同小入り口には、子ども力士全員の手作りののぼり旗が掲げられ、記念大会を盛り上げた。
大会には、両校区の住民ら約２００人が来場。団体戦では、住吉が６対３で星原を下した。のぼり旗は各家庭にプレゼントされた。

Tanegashima kids sumo meet
“Nakayoshi Sumo Taikai,” a sumo wrestling competition by children in two adjacent school districts located on the west coast of Tanegashima island--Sumiyoshi, Nishinoomote City and Hoshihara in Nakatane Town--took place at a sumo ring in Sumiyoshi Elementary School on May 7.
The traditional event began in the early Showa era in the 1920s and this year marked its 80th anniversary. The school entrance saw a display of hand-crafted flags by all the kid-wrestlers, which added a festive mood to the memorial event.
Around 200 residents from the two districts visited the sport meet. In the team competition, Sumiyoshi beat Hoshihara 6 to 3. The flags were given away to each household of the two districts.
