“N” for “No” --Sendai nuclear plant construction
In the wake of the accident at Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sendai Liaison Council on the Anti Development of Nuclear Power Plants, chaired by Ms. Torihara Ryoko, visited Kagoshima prefectural office on March 28 where they, in a letter addressed to prefectural governor Ito Yuichiro, demanded the withdrawal of the consent to the construction of the Sendai No.3 nuclear power plant.
The fourteen members headed by Torihara lodged a protest against Ito’s remark at the prefectural assembly final plenary session in March. Ito’s remark was: “the central government will make the final safety assessment (toward the additional nuclear plant’s construction).” However, the protesters are saying it’s irresponsible of the governor to leave all the decision-making (up to the national government) when the consensus on the construction had been finalised by the will of the people of Kagoshima.
In their letter, they also urged the sharing of information on disaster prevention measures of the Sendai nuclear power station by the citizens, the development of an evacuation strategy for pregnant women and infants, as well as the establishment of evacuation shelters in case of accidents, among other requests.
