Sweet exchanges taking root
The 30th Karaimo Koryu--Haru (Sweet Potato Exchange--Spring), an exchange programme in which families in Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures host foreign students attending universities or vocational colleges in Japan, kicked off on March 13; and ceremonies were held in Kagoshima City and other places for introductions.
The programme is organised by the local non-profit organisation “Karaimo Koryu,” and thirty-two international students at colleges in such places as Tokyo and Aichi are taking part. The number of participants decreased significantly from the previous year due to the eruptions at Shinmoedake peak and the Great East Japan Earthquake. The participants will stay at private households in fourteen cities and towns, including Satsumasendai City, until the 27th.
