鹿児島大空襲６３年目
鹿児島市で死者２３００人以上、負傷者３５００人以上の犠牲者を出した鹿児島大空襲から６３年を迎えた１７日、市内各地で慰霊祭や平和集会が開かれた。易居町で開かれた慰霊式典では、午前９時から８０人を超える遺族・関係者らが参列。市遺族会顧問の竹之内克己さん（７５）は「このような犠牲を二度と出さないためにもこの体験を次の世代に伝えていきたい」と話した。

Remembering Kagoshima Air Raids
On June 17, memorial services and peace rallies took place throughout Kagoshima city commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the Great Kagoshima Air Raids during the Second World War that left more than 2,300 people dead and 3,500 injured. In Yasui Town, over 80 people including the bereaved family members attended a ceremony from 9am. One of the attendees, the adviser for the city’s War-Bereaved Association, Mr. Takenouchi Katsumi (75), said he would like to pass on the experience to the next generations so as never to repeat the tragedy again.

‘memorial … City’ は「鹿児島市内各地で慰霊祭や平和集会が開かれた」。‘memorial service’ は「慰霊祭」。‘peace rally’ は「平和集会」。‘take place’ は「（事が）起る、生ずる；行われる（cf. happen, occur）、開催される（be held）」。‘commemorating … War’ は「第二次大戦中の鹿児島大空襲から６３年を迎えたのを記念して」。‘commemorate’ は「・・・を（儀式などで）祝う、記念する（hono(u)r）；追悼する」。‘anniversary’ は「・・・周年記念日」。‘air raid’ は「空襲（air attack）」。‘that … injured’ は「（空襲は）死者２３００人以上、負傷者３５００人以上の犠牲者を出した」。‘left’ は ‘leave’ の過去形で、ここでは「・・・の状態をあとに残す」の意。‘dead’ ‘injured’ はともに形容詞で、それぞれ「死んでいる」「傷ついた」。

‘over … ceremony’ は「遺族を含む８０人以上が参列した」。‘including …’ は「・・・を含めて」。逆は ‘excluding’。‘bereaved’ は「（身内や親しい人に）先立たれた、遺族（the ~）」。なお、普通、関係ない人はこのような行事に参列しないと思いますので、上記では敢えて「関係者」という訳はしていませんが、ここでの「関係者」に当たる表現は ‘people concerned’ ‘people involved’ といったところでしょうか。他にも ‘interested party’（利害関係者）、‘authoriz(s)ed personnel’（業務上の関係者）などがあります。

‘One … attendees’ は「参列者のひとり」。‘one of the …’ は「・・・のうちのひとつ」で、後の名詞は必ず複数形になることに注意です！‘the … Association’ は「市遺族会顧問」。‘said … again’ は「そのような悲劇を二度と繰り返さないために、この経験を次の世代に伝えたいと話した」。‘pass on ~ to …’ は「～を・・・に伝える」。‘so as (not/never) to …’ は「・・・する（しない／決してしない）ように」。‘tragedy’ は「悲劇、惨事」。



タイトルの “Remembering Kagoshima Air Raids”　は「鹿児島大空襲を追悼」。
‘remember’ は「覚えている、思い起こす；（死者を）追悼する、慰霊する（commemorate, memorializ(s)e）」。

東京大空襲といえば、２００７年に遺族が政府を相手取って訴訟を起したことも記憶に新しいですが、鹿児島でも大空襲があったという事実は、若い人の間では意外と知られていないかもしれません。知覧の特攻隊などとともに、語り継がれていかなければならない歴史です。
