鹿児島県は２０１１年度当初予算案に、霧島市隼人町の県有地に「動物愛護センター」を新設するための事業費を盛り込んだ。捨て犬・猫の譲渡体制を拡充し、県民に動物愛護への理解を深めてもらうのが目的。
県生活衛生課によると、０９年度、県内では約５４００頭の犬・猫が殺処分された。一方で、譲渡されたのは４０７頭にとどまる。同課は「譲渡の促進や飼い主のモラル向上に努め、殺処分される動物をできる限り少なくしたい」としている。

Kagoshima moves to protect animals
Kagoshima Prefecture has earmarked in its initial budget plan for 2011 a project expense for the construction of “Animal Care Centre” on the prefectural land in Hayato, Kirishima City. It intends to expand the foster home system of abandoned cats and dogs, and thereby raise the awareness of animal care among the citizens.
According to the prefecture’s Environmental Health Department, around 5,400 cats and dogs had been destroyed in 2009 across the prefecture. The department said it would like to minimise the number of euthanised animals by promoting adoption and by enhancing the ethics of pet owners.
