Oshima Pongee on red carpet
　A fashion show of the local Oshima Tsumugi pongee took place in arcades in Kagoshima City’s Tenmonkan district on February 19. The event was hosted by the Genuine Oshima Tsumugi Cooperative Association in Kagoshima City with the aim of promoting its “Genuine Oshima Tsumugi Festival” at the city’s Yamakataya department store from the 26th to the 28th of this month, exhibiting a great variety of the local garments and their charms.
The catwalk show featured seventeen male and female models, which included the past “Genuine Oshima Tsumugi Queens” and the producers of the traditional clothes. Adorned in traditional mud-dyed kimonos, or Western clothes made of light-toned fabric, they sashayed down the 20-metre-long red carpet.
Passersby, impressed by the surprising show, stopped to reaffirm the beauty of the silk fabric from the Oshima islands.
