鹿児島県は２０１１年度、奄美群島の島唄の保存と伝承を目的とした事業に乗り出す。数千曲あるともいわれる島唄をデータベース化。後継者育成や、観光など奄美の魅力を伝える情報発信に活用したい考えだ。
唄者が減少しつつあることに加え、口承で歌い継がれるにもかかわらず、若者に島口（方言）が分からない人が増えているのも、今回の取り組みの背景にある。
事業は３年計画で、県は１１年度当初予算案に５５０万円を計上した。

Prefecture tunes in on Amami folk songs
Kagoshima Prefecture will start a project in the fiscal year 2011 with the aim of preserving and transmitting folk songs of the Amami islands. It will compile a database of the native songs which are said to number in the thousands, and utilise it in the training of successors and in the promotion of the sub-tropical islands’ charms, which include tourism.
In addition to the declining number of singers, more young people have become unable to understand the dialect even though the songs are passed down by word of mouth, prompting the prefecture to take the measure.
The prefecture had earmarked 5,500,000 yen for the three-year programme in the initial budget for the fiscal year 2011.
