Kagoshima population hits record low
It was learned on January 20 that the population of Kagoshima Prefecture (by quick estimation) marked the lowest in the post-war period at about 1.7 million according to the quinquennial national census as of October 1, 2010. Though it had barely remained above the 1.7 million level, the figure had decreased by around 50,000 since the last survey in 2005 when it numbered 1,753,179. The prefecture saw its population peak in 1955 at 2,044,112.
The census was the first statistics conducted since the country turned into a full-blown depopulating society, and attention in Kagoshima had been focused on whether the prefecture’s population would fall below 1.7 million to become the same level as the pre-war period.
