鹿屋警察署は６５歳以上の自主的な免許返納を促すため、地元蔵元の協力を得て、返納者全員に焼酎をプレゼントする独自企画を始めた。焼酎には森伊蔵、魔王といった入手困難な銘柄も含まれている。
同署管内の交通事故死亡者は２００９年が１９人、１０年が１２人に上り、県内２８署で２年連続ワースト１。中でも昨年は１２人中１１人が６５歳以上だったことから、吉井和幸交通課長が返納メリット制度を思いついた。
吉井課長は「運転に自信がなくなった高齢者が勇気を持って返納するきっかけになれば」と話した。

Kanoya police offers shochu-for-licence scheme to discourage aged drivers
In its unique attempt, Kanoya Police Station, with the sponsorship of local distilleries, began offering shochu liquor to everyone who surrenders their driver’s licences. The scheme is aimed at encouraging people aged 65 or older to spontaneously giving up on steering the wheel. Among the sweet potato-made spirits to be given away are brands such as Moriizou and Mao that are difficult to obtain in the market.
Among the 28 police stations in the prefecture, Kanoya marked the worst transportation fatality rate within its jurisdiction for the second consecutive year; 19 in 2009 and 12 in 2010. Above all, eleven out of twelve casualties last year were people aged 65 or older, which inspired Mr. Yoshii Kazuyuki, Traffic Policy Division chief, to come up with the idea.
Yoshii said he hoped the shochu-for-licence system would encourage elderly who are not confident in their driving ability to surrender their licences.
