首相官邸に「櫻島」
官邸の閣議室前に、薩摩川内市出身で東京都在住の画家竹留一夫さん（８０）の洋画「櫻島」が５月１日から飾られている。この絵の前で、福田康夫首相が原則として１日２回記者団の質疑に応じる。「さわやかで季節感がある。見栄えもいい」（官邸事務所）点が評価された。

Sakurajima displayed at premier’s office
An oil painting titled ‘Mt. Sakurajima’ by a locally-born artist Mr. Takedome Kazuo (80), who is from Satsuma-Sendai City and resides in Tokyo, has been displayed since May in the entrance of the cabinet room in the prime minister’s official residence. The regular question-and-answer session by the press corps with Prime Minister Fukuda Yasuo is held in front of this painting, in principal, twice a day. According to the residence’s office, the picture was valued for its refreshing touch and for its sense of season as well as attractiveness.

‘An … (80)’ は「地元出身の画家、竹留一夫さん（８０）の油絵『櫻島』」。「洋画」は ‘Western(European) painting’ ですが、ここでは油絵という訳をしています。‘locally-born’は「地元出身の」。‘who … Tokyo’ は「薩摩川内市出身で東京在住の」。‘reside’ は「・・・に居住する」。‘live’ よりも堅い言い方です。‘cabinet room’ は「閣議室」。‘prime … residence’ は「首相官邸」。‘residence’ は「住居」。

‘The … session’ は「定例の質疑応答」。‘regular’ は「通常の；規則正しい；一定の」。‘question-and-answer’ は「質疑応答」。‘session’ は「会議、会合；（特定の活動の）集まり」。‘press corps’ は「記者団」。単に ‘reporters’ とも。‘corps’ は「軍団、舞台；（同一活動の）団体、団、班」。‘in principle’ は「原則として」。‘principle’ は「原理、原則；主義、信条」。綴りが似ている単語に ‘principal’（最も重要な；支配者、社長、校長（head master））があります。

‘According … office’ は「その邸宅（官邸）の事務所によると」。‘according to …’ は「・・・によれば」という、ニュース表現の定番です。また、「・・・の順に（in order of）；・・・を基準として（on the basis of）」といった意味でも使われます。‘the … attractiveness’ は「その絵はさわやかさと季節感、見栄えのよさが評価された」。‘refreshing’ は「元気づける、すがすがしい」。類は ‘brisk’。‘touch’ は「（芸術的）手法、特質」。‘sense of season’ は「季節感」。‘season sense’ とも。‘as well as ’ は「・・・と同様に、・・・はのみならず」。‘attractiveness’ は「魅力；人目を引くこと」。類は ‘impressiveness’ など。



タイトルの “Sakurajima displayed at premier’s office”　は「首相官邸に桜島が飾られる」。
‘display’ は「飾る、展示する」。‘premier’ は「首相、総理大臣」（prime minister）。ジーニアス英和辞典によると、フランス・イラリア・中国などの首相を指し、日本の首相は ‘prime minister’ と兼用できますが、中国の首相については、後者は使わないとか。
「篤姫ブーム」がとうとう首相官邸まで届いたようです。
