Kabuki stage on Ioujima Island
Mishima Village will host a Kabuki performance, “Shunkan,” featuring Mr. Nakamura Kanzaburo (55) among others on Ioujima Island on March 30 next year. The holding of a Kabuki play on the island will be the first time in 15 years since 1996 when Kanzaburo was active under the name of “Kankuro.” They will also stage the performance in Kagoshima City on April 2.
At a press conference, Kanzaburo said “Playing the role of Shunkan (a Buddhist monk) in Mishima Village has been one of the unforgettable memories in my lifetime. It is a great pleasure that I was given the opportunity to act with my first and second sons.”
Before the press conference, Village Mayor Hidaka told a reporter: “The Kabuki performance will be a “treasure” for the village as it will be staged on Ioujima Island, which has connections with Shunkan, and for which the Kanzaburo Family will act with a lot of soul. I would like to honour them by carrying the momentum toward the development of the local economy.”
