Mounting amor patriae in armour…
Hioki City’s traditional event, Myoenji-mairi and related events took place mainly at Tokushige Shrine in the city’s Ijuin for two days from October 23. The shrine and surrounding area had been crowded all day with people who came walking from outside the town—from places such as Kagoshima City.
At dusk, Some 150 members of the Ijuin-cho Musha-gyoretsu Hozon-kai (Ijuin town Samurai procession preservation society) paraded through the downtown area to visit the shrine, where wavering flames of bonfires silhouetted the figures of the paraders in armour. There was also a display of fireworks commemorating the city’s fifth anniversary of establishment.
Myoenji-mairi has been conducted to commemorate the heroic deed of general Shimadzu Yoshihiro of the Satsuma Clan who successfully broke through the enemy line to return home amid the decisive battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Related events occured on the following day such as Judo and Kendo competitions, a walking event from Kagoshima City, along with a festival at a special site.
