Kagoshima lost boon as Atsuhime boom ended
According to tourism statistics compiled by Kagoshima Prefecture, the number of visitors from other prefectures who stayed more than one night had plummeted to 7,500,000, down by 8% or 650,000 from the previous year when the prefecture drew public attention due to the broadcast of the NHK(public broadcaster)’s annual history drama that featured locally born “Princess Atsuhime.”
The report attributed the decline to the transient effect of the Atsuhime boom, global recession, and the spread of the new type of flu, among other reasons.
In addition, the amount of money spent by the tourists who stayed more than one night had dropped by nearly 20%, which “had become obvious proofs of the consumers’ ‘cheaper-nearer-shorter’ orientation” toward travelling, according to the prefecture’s Tourism Department.
