川内大綱引
鹿児島県指定無形民俗文化財の川内大綱引（川内大綱引保存会主催）が９月２２日夜、薩摩川内市大小路町の国道３号であった。さらし姿の男衆約３０００人が上方、下方に分かれ体を激しくぶつけ合った。
大綱は長さ３６５メートル、直径３５センチ、重さ６トン。午後８時１５分すぎ、一番太鼓が打ち鳴らされると、「だん木」と呼ばれるくいを境に、押し隊同士が肉弾戦を始めた。
開始後すぐに下方側が大綱を引き込み、激しい攻防はわずか１０分足らずで終了、審判長が下方側の勝利を宣言した。

Sendai Tug of War
Kagoshima Prefecture’s intangible folk cultural asset, Sendai Oh-Tsunahiki (Great Tug of war), conducted by Sendai Oh-Tsunahiki Preservation Society, took place on the national route 3 in Ohshouji, Satsumasendai City on the night of September 22. Some 3,000 men in “sarashi” (white stomach bands) were divided into two sides-- Kami-gata (upper side) and Shimo-gata (lower side)--and clashed with each other in a fierce display of battle.
The great rope measured 365 meters in length, 35 centimetres in diameter and six tons in weight. At 8:15 pm with the start signal being the bang of a drum, the combat teams of both sides began pushing against each other on a border marked by the post called “Dangi.”
Shimo-gata gained a commanding lead throughout the heated contestof only ten minutes, and the chief judge declared Shimo-gata the winner.
